Security Reminder

December 2, 2014

No particular incident or specific threat lies behind this item.  It’s essentially a sensible and routine suggestion especially for the information of newcomers.

One of the forgotten elements of living within a shared building complex is that everyone in the building contributes to the safety and security of the other residents.

There is a shared responsibility in choosing to live in this environment. This shared responsibility extends to all the parts of the complex and in particular the basement carpark. These spaces are susceptible to burglaries and residents and their guests have to be vigilant when coming or going.

Offenders often take advantage of residents’ failing to wait for the garage door to close before driving off.   Those extra 10-20 seconds are vital and residents should keep watch for any suspicious activity at this time.

If you see someone entering as the garage door opens or closes and you do not recognise them, then you have every right to question whether they have a valid reason to be there.

Or, if you are not confident in doing so, call Police Operations immediately on 131 444 and report it.

Driving Tip

October 19 2016

Have you ever been parked by the roadside and had opened the driver’s door when you were hit, or almost hit, by a passing cyclist?  It’s a common occurrence and increasingly so with the encouragement to cyclists these days to share the road with cars.

A big help is to use your left hand to open the door.  This means you have to stretch across, turning your head and body to the right.  This results in having a much wider view of what’s happening on your right hand side, and what’s coming up from behind.  Try it.

The practice is now part of the driving licence test in the Netherlands and is believed to have dramatically reduced the number of bicycle/door collisions.

Have you tried cooking with French Tarragon?

French tarragon. Capital Hill Apartments herb garden.

Amongst the herbs that are thriving in the Capital Hill Apartments herb garden is French tarragon, Artemesia dracunclulus.

French tarragon has a unique, attractive flavour. The fresh green leaves have a very appetising taste that seems to contain pepper, balsam and anise. The flavour has also been described as fennel, anise, and liquorice.

Use in salads, fish, chicken and boiled or poached eggs. Add to white wine vinegar, pickles, mustards and butter. The French use tarragon in many sauces, such as béarnaise sauce, tartar and hollandaise sauce, it is one of the herbs in the classic French blend – fines herbes – equal parts of parsley, chervil, chives and tarragon. The fresh herbs are chopped finely together and can be sprinkled over green salad, added to omelettes, poached chicken or fish, mixed into a butter sauce for fish, or sprinkled over any dish as a garnish.

French Taragon

French tarragon. Capital Hill Apartments herb garden.

Amongst the herbs in the Capital Hill Apartments herb garden is French tarragon, Artemesia dracunclulus! xx

French tarragon has a unique, subtle and attractive flavour. The fresh green leaves have a taste that seems to include pepper, anise and liquorice.

Use in salads, fish, chicken and boiled or poached eggs. Add to white wine vinegar, pickles, mustards and butter. The French use tarragon in sauces such as sauce béarnaise and sauce tartare. It is one of the herbs in the classic French blend – fines herbes – equal parts of parsley, chervil, chives and tarragon. The fresh herbs are chopped finely together and can be sprinkled over green salad, added to omelettes, poached chicken or fish, mixed into a butter sauce for fish, or sprinkled over any dish as a garnish.

Russian tarragon is sometimes wrongly labelled as French tarragon in nurseries, so it’s a good idea to take a leaf and taste it. The anise flavour and a tingle on the tongue identify the true culinary tarragon. French tarragon is the best variety for the kitchen, but rarely sets seed. It is established from vegetative or root cuttings. Russian tarragon seeds profusely when mature but has little flavour.

Telstra Mobile Black Spot!

We have just moved in and have had trouble with mobile coverage. Both our mobiles are with Telstra, calls drop out all the time, our next door neighbour has the same problem. We are not able to use the internet at all. We want to do something about the dreadful Telstra Mobile coverage we have and would encourage other residents to complain to Telstra if they are also having problems.

Telstra has a “Black Spot” reporting website which can be found here:

Yours sincerely, Dr Richard Lea

“Push Bike Riders”

The Executive Committee has been approached by several residents enquiring about the possibility of quarantining some space in the basement for push bikes. A suggestion to convert a Visitors Car Park has been ruled out on the grounds that a change to the Units Plan would be required, and that is a major legal impediment.  Another idea is to use part of the large storage cage near the Car Wash Bay but there are practicalities to be thought through here.
Bright ideas are sought.  The hope is that someone will come up with a workable and economic solution.  If one were to be found, then it could solve the problem some of you have with finding a secure place to store your bikes.
So that we get an idea of how feasible and popular this might be, would you please contact Gaye McDermott on 0419 341 416 if you are interested and would use such a facility.

“Recipes To Share”

The Executive Committee would like to share with the Capital Hill Apartment community some of their favourite recipes.  If you have a favourite recipe that you would like to share then please forward onto Blandfordia (Managing Agents) for up loading to the website.

Cooking Smells

There is always healthy debate amongst those of us living in close proximity, surrounded by odours that emanate from our own or neighbour’s apartments. It is easy to sympathise if you are the ’emanatee’ but how about some useful hints for us ’emanators’!

Cooking Smells – Try boiling some powdered cloves in water after you get done cooking. This is a great method to use if you like cooking fried foods. You can also try boiling powdered cinnamon or a cinnamon stick. Heat it up over the stove while you’re cooking. You can also turn on your stove fan. Allow the cinnamon to heat up for awhile after you’re done cooking.
